How to store wine is an important consideration whether you favour red, white or sparkling.  Storing it correctly is essential.  If you have the notion that simply letting your bottle sit on a shelf, or storing in on a rack for an extended period of time is acceptable, read on.  Doing so could have a drastic affect on the flavour or bouquet of your wine.

It’s true that wines are perishable; however, properly storing it can actually improve the wine over time.  This aging process – done properly – can add to the aroma, flavour, texture and complexity of the wine.

So, what are the correct steps?  First of all, you need to determine how long you plan to store the wine for.  Not all wines can last for a long period of storage, so keep you less expensive wines for no longer than three to six months.  On the other hand, more expensive, quality wines, can be stored for years, even decades.

Regardless of the length of time you plan to store your wine, there are some conditions that need to be met.  The first, and the most crucial, is that the bottle must be stored horizontally, never in an upright position.  The reason for this is so that the cork never gets a chance to dry out.  The wine that rests against it will keep the cork moist.

Another condition to be aware of is the stability of the environment in which you store your wine.  Any kind of vibration or movement will have an adverse impact on your wine, so storing it on top of appliances, or on the side of the house that shakes when a train goes by is not a good idea.  Keep the wine still.

The room temperature at which you store your wine is also an important factor.  The ideal storage temperature is 12 degrees C (55 degrees F).  Bottles should be stored away from any drafts and temperature changes should be gradual.

Light can also have a negative impact on your wine, which is why most wine bottles are made of coloured glass.  Keep your wine out of direct sunlight, as too much light can react with the protein in the wine, polluting it’s’ flavour by forming a haze and a bad aroma.

If you are thinking of long term storage for you wines, you need to go high tech as the correct atmospheric conditions are required.  A high humidity of approximately 70% or so must be maintained.  This reduces the chances of the cork drying despite the bottle being horizontal and also reduces the chances of your wine evaporating.  Another interesting fact, but often overlooked, is what else we store beside our wine.  Any food or liquid that has a strong odour – think vinegar – that could be released into the air, may be absorbed by the cork, and then impact your wine!

So, the time has come to open your wine and enjoy it.  What if you don’t finish the bottle in one sitting?  Can you store it a little longer once it’s been opened?  Yes, but no more than a few days.  Once your wine has been exposed to the air and mixes with oxygen, it begins to oxidize, and this process alters the essence of your wine.

Drink up, but drink responsibly!

Some people advise you not to undertake such privately self-organized wine tasting tour during weekends and in peak seasons and decide in advance which wineries you are planning to visit and pack some of your own food and water.  Whichever your option, the driver has to refrain from tasting wine and stay clear-headed for palpable reasons.

There are also bicycle tours between the town of Sonoma and Napa Valley, organized by local agencies, which might be a more intimate and exciting way of seeing Napa Valley wineries.

All wineries or tasting rooms are open to visitors only during pre set hours.  This factor must be taken into account when chalking out a wine tasting tour. By requesting visitors to make prior appointments, the wineries make sure that people get a fulfilling experience of the winery tour. Some wineries might in addition offer visits to the wine lab for people to know more about making wine.
The best way to broaden your knowledge of wines is to sample wines in a tasting room. The winery staff will also be there to share their product knowledge with you and guide you to getting the most out of your visit. Selecting the right wine to serve at a wedding and reception is sometimes a tough job. Do you want American or French? How much do you want to spend? Do you want sparkling wine or a nice red?

There are a number of very good, very affordable wines, in 1.5 liter bottles that make it easy to save money and get great wedding gifts. One of the best years for wedding wines was 1995 and that includes both reds and whites and most of them sell at very moderate prices and are readily available at any fine food stores.

It is also a good idea, especially if you are on a budget, to check out some of the countries that have recently become very competitive in the wine markets. Countries like Chile, South Africa and Australia have been making good wines for ages but are just being recognized as wine countries. There are wines in South Africa that date from the 1600´s and 100 year old vintages are common in Chile and Australia. The bottom line here is that wines from these countries are top quality and very reasonably priced when compared to European or American wines.

Some of the better, yet low priced wines available are Buena Vista, a 1995 Cabernet Sauvignon from California that has a full bodied flavor and works well with many entrees. Bridgeview, a 1994 Reserve Pinot Noir from Oregon is very smooth and light, and Meridian 1997 is a Gewuztraminer from California that turns out to be very luscious and sweet. Finally, the sparkling wines are a treat for any table and one of the best is Paul Cheneau Blanc de Blancs Brut that tantalizes the taste buds without burning them out.

With all the available wines to choose from, sometimes, it is easier if you simply let somebody do the selecting for you. This is one of the many reasons why a number of wine connoisseurs join a wine of the month club. Such clubs are organized for members to enjoy a bottle of exceptional wine without going from one store to another.

Wine of the month clubs are well aware of the fact that wine lovers have their own preferences. As a member, you do not have to worry about receiving some wine you will just end up storing in your cellar or giving away to your colleague. Essentially, the choice is still up to you. Most clubs let the members select, among the types of wine, the ones they like to get. For example, if you love red wines, just check the box indicating that you want to receive only red wines.

Majority of wine clubs offer two red wines, two white wines, or a bottle of both every month. However, if you are a hardcore red wine drinker, there are red wine clubs too. As what you would expect from the name, a red wine club only provides their members the best red wine.

There are a variety of red wines to choose from. Though red wine clubs limit their shipments to red wines, there are several red wines produced all over the world. In order to ensure that what you will be getting is indeed something you wish, you have to mention specifics. Do you prefer Old World wines? Are you open to the idea of trying new wines from recently established wineries? Do you have a soft spot for Merlot or Cabernet Sauvignon?

Of course, it is always helpful if you know some red wine basics. Red wines are recognized for their tannins and good aging potential. Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon may resemble one another but the former is noted to have lower tannin levels. Barbera has remarkable acidity balanced by its low tannin level. Barolo is a type of red wine best served after long aging. Amarone has full rich flavors with a hint of sweetness to the point of being faintly fruity. For red wines that are medium-bodied with subtle tannic content, try Carmener and Chianti. Zinfandel is also one of the popular red wines these days with its fruity characteristic. Other wines with fruity-like flavors are Tempranillo (strawberries), Sangiovese (cherries), Petite Sirah (blackberries), Grenache (berries), and Gamay (bananas).

On the other hand, if you are not that familiar with red wines and you just developed a taste for them, red wine clubs can serve as perfect source of information. You can take advantage of the newsletters and pamphlets offered by the clubs. Also, when they send out wines to members, they make certain that important details are included in the delivery of the wine of the month such as a brief background of the winery, serving suggestions, and even approximate time for aging.

If you are one of those people who loves surprises and are on the lookout for rare finds, this is a great opportunity for you. By joining a wine club, red wines that are hard to get will be delivered in your doorstep with you not having to do anything. You can even share the experience by applying membership for your friends. Red wine club memberships are indeed exciting gifts especially during holiday seasons.

Aside from the guarantee of receiving the finest of red wines every month, the chance to expand your wine knowledge, and the prospect of being the ideal gift, add the possibility of saving some dollars when you join red wine clubs. They order in bulks and as a rule, wineries sell them at a cheaper price and you get to reap that benefit. No doubt, this is the best way to get red wine. Want to make wine?  It really is a process that you can do yourself.  You will just need to get a few chemicals and some equipment.

First you will need your materials.  For wine making, you need a water bottle or glass jug,  a rubber stopper, an airlock, a stirrer, funnel, turkey baster, bottles for the finished product, a siphon, and a  sanitizer.

Next of course, you need ingredients.  These include juice of the fruit to ferment (make sure it does not contain Sorbate if you buy fruit juice) one gallon for every gallon you are making, sugar, yeast, and chemicals such as: Sodium/Potassium Matebisulfite, potassium sorbet and a yeast nutrient.

Now you are ready to get started.  Make sure all of your equipment has been sanitized and your ingredients are in front of you.  For every gallon you are making you will need 20mL of the sulfite solution.  Mix that with half a gallon of the juice and 1 pound of sugar.  Shake it to dissolve the sugar then add the other half gallon of juice.  Add your sulfite and yeast nutrient, making sure that it is thoroughly mixed.  Pour yeast into the liquid through a funnel.

This is it for the mixing part.  Next you put your rubber stopper in and your airlock on.

Now comes the fermentation part.  Place your wine in a cool and out of the way place.  Check but do not remove your airlock every few days.  After about 4 or 5 weeks, your wine should be fermented and ready for sampling.

As you can see, making your own wine or country wine at home is not a truly difficult or involved process.  All it takes is the materials, a little know how and the wherewithal to do it.

Once you have made the wine, you may want to think about decanting your wine. The best way to decant wine is through a wine aerator.
