Cigar smoking is the most social of pleasures. And with bans on public smoking enacted in almost thirty states, covering half the United States population, cigar smokers must be feeling more and more like an embattled minority. So what could make more sense than a gathering aimed at, and intended for, cigar smokers?

How about several?

The calendar year is actually dotted with cigar-related events, some of them years or even a decade or more old. The modern wave of cigar conventions and festivals has its nearest origins in the so-called “cigar boom” of the 1990s – the sudden spiking of interest in cigars that began in 1992 after decades of declining sales, a (sometimes little) dying customer base and little new interest.

Fittingly enough, the most famous of these events is hosted by Cigar Aficionado – the magazine many credit with crucially supporting, if not downright inaugurating, the cigar boom itself. The magazine started publishing the same year (1992) that cigar sales suddenly, sharply increased, and it likely added to that new energy with its advocacy of cigar smoking as a perfect pastime for the stressed-out, go-go,-no-time-to-pause-and-reflect 1990s (remember the abrupt surge of interest in coffeeshops around the same time?).

Cigar Aficionado’s “Big Smoke Weekend” was inaugurated in 1993, only a year after the magazine itself began publication. At first it was a New York-in-November thing – for its first New York bow, in long-ago 1993, it attracted over a thousand guests, who flocked to the a hotel in Times Square, to dance, talk, and sample new cigars, drinks, food, and accessories, among other things. By 1996 Cigar Aficionado had added a second event in Las Vegas, which included panelists and educational seminars for the first time. “Big Smokes” have multiplied since then – over a hundred have been held, in various places, with a total head count of approximately two hundred fifty thousand, including visitors from as far away as Iceland and Russia.

Attendees sometimes pick up an empty tote bag near the door, which is gradually filled with promos from some of the most prestigious makers of cigars, accessories, and gadgets. The magazine has tended to promote premium cigar makers, since its inception, and it tends to be the cream of these that show up: Arturo Fuente, Tarno, CAO, Montecristo, etc. Luxury automakers tend to be out in force as well, perhaps reflecting the magazine’s well-heeled subscriber base.

The tradition of having twin “Big Smokes” in Las Vegas and New York city continues, despite those cities’ recent flirtation with anti-smoking laws. (New York has passed tougher smoking restrictions in the past few years, and so has Las Vegas, though the all-important smoking venue in that city-the game rooms of casinos-continues to be exempt from any public-smoking bans.) The “Big Smoke” in Las Vegas will dominate the weekend of November 9-11, 2008, with two evenings and daytime seminars. Saturday seminars include taste-tests, cigar-rolling demonstrations, and what’s sure to be a very enlightening look at premium tequilas, among other things. The “Big Smoke” evenings will include, as usual, sample tables, fine liquor (included in the price of the ticket), and premium food (ditto). The New York “Big Smoke” follows on November 20.

But maybe you’d rather visit warmer climes-especially in November. If so, you’re in luck, because Ybor City’s Cigar Heritage Festival goes down November 15, 2008 in Ybor City, Tampa, Florida, the neighborhood that was built around Tampa’s great late-nineteenth-century cigar factories. This is more of a populist celebration, with free admission, but you still have a chance to buy premium cigars (from Rocky Patel, Arturo Fuente, and Camacho, among others), enjoy tours of the historic neighborhood (officially a US Historic Site), sample ethnic food, and learn how a cigar is rolled. Among many other things.

One way or another, then, US cigar fans who love to travel have every reason to be thankful for November.

CigarFox provides you the opportunity to build your own sampler of the finest cigars that include cigar brands like Montecristo, Romeo & Julieta, H Upmann, Macanudo, Cohiba, Partagas, Gurkha and many more. Choose from more than 1200 different cigars! Other cigar products include cigar humidors, cigar boxes, and cigar accessories like Zippo Lighters.

Unlike cigarettes, cigars are frequently associated with one’s societal status. Hence, you must have seen many fat and celebrated people having a whiff from cigars at munificent parties. Cigars that are valued by veterans are besides seen in many classic movies. But cigars are not merely for the affluent and celebrated.  Even you can enjoy smoke a cigar!

Prior to getting into a smoking dressing with a cigar, it is necessary to take a few tips into account. Whether you are looking for a cigar store or an online shop, you need to find unwrap whether the cigars are fresh or not. In order to check the freshness, you need to pinch them and notice a tender wrapper and binder. Besides, you should also check for any sort of discoloration in each cigar. You should rate the brand depending on the quality and appearance. While you are enjoying the drag, you should also experience a balanced aroma and flavor.  If purchasing online then it is best to purchase from a well known store online.

Flavored cigars are also high in demand.  You can select from a variety of flavored cigars, including bourbon, rum, vanilla, coffee and many other flavors.  Apart from that, many find a vanilla flavored cigar proves to be the best. It has a few drops of vanilla bean flavor and on dragging on it, you will get the flavor of sweet vanilla. Many people prefer this flavor over various other flavors.

Handmade cigars can be found in many stores due to their increasing popularity. As it is believed that the cigars of the best quality are usually hand-crafted, many people merely opt for these kinds. They assure a regular quality command, making the smoker feel satisfying and relaxed.

There are several stored that offer an array of cigars online. They provide both branded and smaller boutique cigar lines. So, purchase the cigars according to your preference. If you just want a drag after a lunch or before some meeting, then you should go for a five-inch cigar. Or else, you can buy a seven-inch cigar with a bigger diameter as it will take hours to finish.

As a novice, you can opt for samplers. They are mostly available online to help the beginners to larn the precise way of smoking a cigar. Do not worry about the cost because there are some online sellers who offer cigars at affordable rat for samplers.

Take the pleasure of cigars sophisticatedly!

If you haven’t always smoked a cigar before, then it seems as if cigar smokers are part of a clandestine clan, a world aside that allows for gulled messages, about masonic handshakes and glances that uncover truths merely cognize to cigar smokers themeselves. You may not experience invited.

However, you are invited – you merely have to defeat the initial fear that you’ll get it incorrect! Here’s my steer to choosing, smoking and enjoying a cigar right.

1. Choosing a cigar

There are two situations when you’ll have to take a cigar – one in a shop, and one in a cigar bar (if you can find one since the smoking ban). It is ever better to go to a cigar bar first, and find a cigar that you like, before you go to the shop and choose a box. Have a right stare at the cigar and experience it – it should not bristle with dryness, and when you infect it a squash, it should have some ‘infect’ – but not too much. You desire the cigar to be politic – with no bumps or tears in the wrapper and no indentations.

There is very little to be derived from smelling the cigar, though – anyone who does this is merely showing away! There are many types of cigar, so inquire for an explanation and if you’re a novice, begin little and work your way up.

Go for a lighter colour, because this will be a lighter smoke, and you will ease your way into cigar smoking. If you purchase cigars online, then you don’t have the advantage of touch and experience, but you do have the advantage of better pricing and a wider range of stock. Buying at the airport or in a local shop does intend that you can spy around, but taking cigars away of a closed box is not potential – you have to cognize which cigars you desire, and then determine on the spot.

2. Smoking a cigar

The best bit! If you are in a cigar bar, ask the waiter to cut it for you – if on your own, you’ll need a cigar guillotine to make a nice, clean cut. Hold the cigar, label end towards your mouth, and hold a match approximately one inch underneath the cigar, allowing the cigar to burn gently. Draw some air, and keep applying the flame until you have a consistent burn. There is conjecture over whether you should use a lighter or not – I say not, as the lighter fluid can smell and affect your enjoyment of the cigar. Use a cedarwood match if you can find one, as that has the most pleasant aroma. The cigar should burn down slowly, and an ash cap will increase your enjoyment of the cigar, keeping it from heating up too much.

Only give the cigar a tap when you feel the ash is going to drop off. Don’t inhale the smoke – you will choke and make yourself feel ill. Just let the smoke circulate around your mouth and gently release it. Don’t blow smoke rings, that’s just wrong. Don’t make a show of it, either – cigar smoking is a private pleasure, not one that you should be showing off about. Never clench the cigar between your teeth (that’s just rude), and ne’er smoke in the company of people who don’t bask cigar smoke.

When you believe the cigar is becoming too acrimonious – you have likely smoked it downwards correct to the end. Don’t be crude and brush your cigar into the ashtray, merely jilt it upside downwards to smoke itself away.

3. Enjoying a cigar

What you will notice is that cigars come in thirds – the first third has a different taste to the second third, and the final third equally has a different taste to the first two. One of the secrets to enjoying a good cigar is to appreciate these thirds properly. Some cigar smokers have a different drink to accompany the cigar for each third. Others prefer to stick to the same drink.

Myself, I prefer a mojito in the summer, or a cognac in the winter. It is equally important that you find a relaxing setting – a tattered, comfortable armchair, or in the company of like-minded cigar smokers. That’s up to you – but the cigar is something to be enjoyed for at least one hour, so make sure you’re in comfort.

This is just a short guide – and when you initiate yourself into the world of cigar smoking, you will doubtless find your own ways of enjoying your smoke.

Washington, D.C. (PRWEB) September 11, 2009 -

Is the day coming when you go into a cigar store and can’t buy a single cigar? That day could come sooner than anyone might expect, according to the International Premium Cigar & Pipe Retailers Association.

The Washington D. C. Council has scheduled a public hearing on Bill 18-124, called the “Single Sale of Cigar Products Prohibition Amendment Act of 2009.” The open ended Bill would ban the sale of individual cigars or cigar products that might be used to introduce marijuana into the human body. The hearing is scheduled for 10:00 a.m. on September 29 in the John A. Wilson building at 1350 Pennsylvania Ave., NW, Washington DC 20004.

“There are cigars, and then there are premium cigars. There is a huge difference between them and we necessitate to educate the Council as to what that difference is because this charged, if enacted, would be devastating to all legitimate cigar stores in the area,” said Chris McCalla, legislative director of the IPCPR.

“The bottom line is that this is bad legislation that won’t do what it is intended to do – stop the use of marijuana. The only thing it will do is irreparable harm to owners of cigar stores, their employees and loyal customers who enjoy premium cigars.”

The more than 2,000 members of IPCPR sell or manufacture premium cigars and tobacco, pipes and related accoutrements. McCalla says they are, for the most part, owner-operators of small, family-owned businesses who have employees and pay local, state and federal taxes.

“The premium cigars we hooked are all hand-made from natural tobaccos. Our customers smoke premium cigars similar most people enjoy fine wines. A premium cigar makes average moments particular and special moments extraordinary. To deny anyone that pleasure would be like banning beer because someone uses it as a chaser for, say, a shot of bourbon,” said McCalla

“Legislators keep raising the taxes on premium cigars until they are so expensive people can only buy one or two at a clock and now they want to ban the individual sale of cigars. Ridiculous!”
McCalla urged all D.C. citizens – smokers and non-smokers – to speak against the bill at the hearing on September 29 or call 202/724-8000 in advance to talk to the Council of the District of Columbia . More information about the Council may be found online at http://www.dccouncil.washington.dc.us/.

Renowned as the Ybor City, the locality contained 200 cigar factories and 12,000 cigar makers or tabaqueros generating an approximated 700 million cigars annually. However, the Ybor City went to seed when the ban and depression plagued the region. The Ybor City developed into a National Historical Landmark over the passing of so many years. Nowadays, tourists are fascinated with the vivaciousness of its ambiance, distinctiveness of its history, and idiosyncrasies of its architecture. This bubbly Latin district even takes pride in its own fermented beer referred to as the Ybor Gold.

Cigars are manually rolled even now by expert tabaqueros, and Roberto Ramirez is 1 of the most illustrious. Born in Cuba, and ranked among the global’s top ten greatest cigar rollers, Roberto is one of the White House’s guests tasked to exhibit his expertise. Ybor City guests can pay a visit to Gonzalez Martinez Cigar Factory found on 21st Street and 7th Avenue and see the handiwork of pro tabaqueros who flaunt their skill everyday.

It’s perfectly understandable for you to be a bit intimidated by all the information out there about cigars. You might even be a little anxious if you’re trying to figure out which cigar is best for you.

But consider this: do you have to be an expert in the nuances and eccentricities of baseball in order to enjoy a game? Do you have to possess an encyclopedic knowledge of whiskey in order to enjoy a nice after dinner drink? Do you have to know the ins and outs of hops, barley, and wheat just to enjoy a cold beer?

You see the point: an in-depth familiarity with cigars is not necessary to enjoy them. All you need to know are a few basic attributes about cigars, and you’ll soon be smoking them like a true connoisseur.

Time of Day

The first thing you should know is that certain cigars generally go better with specific times of day. Conventional wisdom maintains that if you are planning to smoke in the morning, then smaller, milder cigars are the most appropriate. Cigars of medium flavor and size are usually preferred during the afternoon hours. And if you are lighting up a stogie at night, you should choose the longest and boldest-flavored cigars in your collection.

Cost

It’s easy to assume that the more expensive the cigar is, the better its quality will be. But you should know that this is not necessarily the case. As with wine or cars, you can certainly find high-quality cigars in any price range. When you are at a smoke shop, don’t be afraid to reveal your budget to the sales associate. He can probably pick out a few cigars which would meet your needs without sacrificing quality.

Color

If you do any cigar browsing at all, you will see that there are dozens of possible different colors associated with cigars. But they all generally fall somewhere within this scale:

Double Claro: light green wrapper, very mild flavor

Claro: light tan wrapper, smooth and mild flavor

Natural: light brown wrapper, full bodied flavor

Colorado: reddish dark brown wrapper, robust and rich flavor

Colorado Maduro: dark brown wrapper, aromatic and rich flavor

Maduro: very dark brown wrapper, sweet and strong flavor

Oscuro: nearly black wrapper, very strong flavor

if you see a wrapper shade with a hue is slightly between the colors mentioned above, you can extrapolate what the flavor will be accordingly.

Size

Does cigar size really matter? The answer is: it depends. Different-sized cigars lend themselves to different cigar-smoking experiences. As you might expect, longer cigars take more time to smoke – which could translate into more enjoyment while you smoke them. But the length of the stogie is not related to the cigar’s actual quality.

That being said, you should know how cigars are measured. The length of cigars is recorded in inches. But the width of the cigar is denoted in what is called ring gauge. The ring gauge is shown in increments of 64th of an inch. So for instance, a ring gauge of 56 would mean that the cigar is 7/8 (56/64) of an inch wide.

Both of these measurements will be denoted on the cigar’s packaging, usually in this format: Length X Ring Gauge.

So if you see a cigar with the denotation of 6X64, you know that the cigar is six inches long and 1 (64/64) inch wide.

Country of Origin

You’ve probably heard about the mystique of “a great Cuban cigar.” While Cuba is home to a long tradition of fine cigars, the nation does not have a corner on the market. Many other fantastic cigars are produced in places like Nicaragua, Panama, Honduras, and the Dominican Republic. And unlike Cuba, these countries have trade agreements with the U.S. – which means they can legally be purchased in America.

Brand

You may hear other people bandy about specific cigar brands, such as Cohiba or Montecristo. While those are names of top-quality products, there are many lesser-known brands which are just as flavorful and enjoyable. Some of these brands include Davidoff, Macanudo, Ashton, Dunhill, or Arturo Fuente.

One major advantage to these lower-profile brands is that they are all legal for purchase in the United States, while Cohiba and Montecristo cigars are not. So if you happen to see a Cohiba or Montecristo cigar in an American cigar shop, be warned: they are probably fakes or knockoffs.

Manufacture

This one is easy: choose hand-rolled over machine-rolled. Every time. You’ll be able to tell the difference.

The biggest thing to keep in mind when making your cigar selection is this: you decide what you like. Don’t automatically choose what some cigar magazine or website tells you is the best cigar. Do some experimenting with different brands, colors, and flavors. Develop your tastes and preferences. Then smoke the cigars that taste the best to you.

The biggest part of smoking cigars like a connoisseur? Knowing what you like and being able to pick out a cigar that lets you enjoy it to its fullest!
