Let’s take a look at some reasons why you might or might not need a cigar humidor. My contention is that every serious cigar smoker should have a good humidor. I also realize that there are also probably a few reasons why you might not need a humidor. So let’s explore these for a few minutes.

You need a good cigar humidor for the following reasons:

Those are just a few of the reasons why you need a good humidor.

When I lived in New York City, I didn’t have a cigar humidor. I didn’t need one. There were at least four really good cigar stores within a couple of blocks of my apartment. If I wanted a cigar, I just took a leisurely walk to one of the cigar stores to pick up a cigar or two for the evening. A couple of the stores even had sitting areas where you could read while you enjoyed your cigar.

Now I will admit that there were times when I wanted a cigar but could not get to a store or the stores were closed. A well stocked humidor would have been nice on those occasions but it wasn’t something that I really needed.

Here are some additional reasons why you might not need a cigar humidor:

Humidor cigar boxes are planned to store cigars within an optimum humidity range of 68% to 72%. This level of humid will be reached while the humidor is at room temperature. A humidor must incorporate a humidification system or device to modify (or take) moisture from its home space to keep the desired humidity. A humidor cigar box normally contains a hygrometer to measure the humidity level inside the box. Most humidor cigar boxes are made of wood, with the inside normally constructed with Spanish cedar.

Types of humidor cigar box include:

Some experts suggest that wiping the interior cedar of your humidor with water is not the best practice, but many people still do it to try and season their humidor more quickly. After this, leave a small container in the humidor and close the lid for approximately 12 hours. If you find that most (or all) of the water has been absorbed, repeat this process for a further 24 hours. Once the water has stopped evaporating, you can start storing your cigars in the humidor. The humidifying element will keep the wood moist, which then keeps the cigars moist. Using distilled water is recommended as it contains far fewer minerals, additives, or bacteria than tap or bottled water.

The dictionary definition of “humidor” is apparent enough. It’s a compartment to store cigars that actively keeps humidity around 70 percent. But abaft that description remains a much more involved and amusing account.

Like most tobacco adornments, the cigar humidor has a far-reaching history. In one form or another, the cigar humidor goes back to archaic times, where tobacco was put away in chilled, damp caves. But the present humidor really originated in the 19th century, when cigars came into their more or less contemporary state.

Today’s cigar humidor is a more complex and concernedly devised thing than its comparatively uncomplicated appearance may allude.

Bigger humidors for storing cigars are apt to be of a size that will hold the range of 10-100 cigars. It’s also an accomplished piece of furniture that can take many forms, ranging from a classy and highly polished wooden or leather box intended for tabletop use to a glass-windowed box with legs.

The latter has to be cautiously regarded, though. Many humidors are beautiful pieces of furniture, but including glass in a cigar humidor presents special problems. It’s more challenging to maintain humidity at the correct level. Moisture cannot make it in or out through the glass and, despite popular belief, a fine humidor – while very well sealed – is not hermetically sealed from the environment. Some air does flow in and out.

Even more difficult is the fact that invisible light (ultraviolet and infrared, to be specific) behaves alternatively when moving through glass than wood. Commanding those circumstances, to refrain from spoiling the wrapper and contents, calls for atypical (and therefore costly) manufacturing materials and methods.

Still, every good cigar humidorarrangement stays true to the same principle: the cigars come first. Luckily, there are several available that meet that goal very well and offer an elegant display at the same time.

Owning a humidor is a true sign of a cigar aficionado. There is a common misconception that humidors are large and often expensive. Yes, you can buy large, even walk-in humidors that will cost you a year’s salary, but that it unnecessary unless you have enough cigars to fill a humidor that large!

The fact is that if you enjoy a cigar every now and then or even several times a day, you may want to consider purchasing a humidor. These handy containers keep every cigar at just the right temperature and humidity. This ensures that your entire stock stays fresh so that you can enjoy them when you are ready.

When you decide that you are ready to purchase your own humidor, you need to consider a few things. How many cigars would you ideally like to store? How many cigars do you think you will actually have on hand at any given time? The reason that this is important is because there should not be too much dead space in your humidor. This can throw off the humidity and temperature level.

Those walk-in humidors are most often seen in a cigar store or specialty bar, although some more wealthy people may have one as a status symbol. The majority of enthusiasts will choose to purchase a tabletop humidor. These generally hold up to three hundred cigars. In addition, you can purchase a travel humidor if you want to bring some with you.

As a cigar enthusiast, you want to get the best possible flavor every time you smoke. It is believed that aging in a humidor for up to ten years will heighten the flavor continually. While you may balk at the idea of waiting ten years to smoke a cigar, remember that it is entirely up to you whether you even choose to explore the aging process. Not everyone with a humidor chooses to age their cigars significantly, but the purpose of a humidor is to keep your stock as flavorful as possible.

If you do decide to endeavor into the aging process, then you should be aware of a few things. Not all are going to taste better with age. This is a personal preference and is not easily figured out without some experimentation. Cheaper cigars may not need to be aged at all, while some will greatly benefit from aging. Again, this is trial and error. A harshly flavored cigar will likely mellow in flavor the longer it is aged. If you don’t like the taste of a cigar, then aging it will not have any effect on your preference. As long as you understand that a humidor is not going to magically transform your cigars in a few simple months or years, you should be pleasantly surprised at your own findings.
