After all warm sunny weather can be experience in most locations, and swimming opportunities are found in many inland areas, either in lakes or rivers. Beaches have several unique characteristics that perhaps contribute to their allure. First there is the sand itself. The soft sand is comfortable to lie on, feels nice to walk on and of course provides a great play environment for small children. But sandy beaches are not the only popular ones, with shingle and rocky beaches also proving attractive. The views offered by coastal locations are also a factor. There is something pleasing about an outlook where the land has ended and the sea stretches off into infinity. Imaginations run riot about what may be over the horizon, and the hustle and bustle of the world inland can be left behind. Of the course the sea itself plays a part. On the island of Fuerteventura are perhaps some of the Canaries’ best sandy beaches. In the north of the island is the biggest beach, stretching for several kilometres south from Corralejo. The waters here, looking across to the nature reserve on the Isla of Lobos, can be a turquoise blue and soft sand reaches inland across dunes for over 2 kilometers. They present almost a desert scene looking inland towards the hills of extinct volcanoes like Volcan de la Olive.

Sports also have their favourite beach locations. From the surfing beaches of Hawaii like the North Shore, Oahu, the home of surfing, where huge waves provide the ultimate thrills for surfers during the winter. Waimea Beach is another spot where massive waves frighten the life out of all but the bravest surfers. In the Canaries surfing is also a popular beach activity, although the waves don’t compare with the size of those in Hawaii. It is however one of Europe’s favourite surf locations with Sotavento in the south of Fuerteventura and Playa de Famara on Tenerife both popular places.

As far as landscape and scenery are concern there are many spectacular beaches around the world, some of which are hardly visited due to their remoteness. Africa has some amazing places, like the beaches of the Tanzanian island of Zanzibar. Paje beach on the east coast is a seeming endless stretch of white sand, fringed by palm trees, with an outlook across the Indian Ocean. In the UK there may not be the vast expanses of beach areas enjoyed by some larger countries but there are some equally spectacular spots. Kynance Cove in Cornwall is one example of a small dramatic beach reached by a steep footpath and Three Cliffs beach on the Gower Peninsula in Wales is regarded by some as one of the most beautiful beaches in the UK.

On the North West coast of Gran Canaria, beaches are few and far between as steep jagged cliff sides plunge into the Atlantic Ocean, but these places have their own beauty too. Driving north along the coast road towards the town of Agaete, the traveler is presented with some breathtaking views.

Finally let’s not forget the children, those for whom the beach presents the perfect play ground. Praia de Rocha close to the town of Portimao on the Portuguese Algarve is a favourite family holiday spot. Along Spain’s Coast del Sol are many golden sandy best favoured by European tourists. Two such examples are at Villajoyosa where the El Paradis beach has almost a mile of golden sand to enjoy and further south near Alicante the Playa Muchavista and the Playa de San Juan form a sweeping arc of almost 4 miles of wonderful sandy beach.

In the Canaries the south of Gran Canaria has perhaps some of the best children’s beaches. The vast sand dunes of Maspalomas and the long sandy beach of Playa del Ingles are both ideal places for children to play the days away in the sun, sand and surf.

These are just a few examples of the best beaches around the world and an illustration of how resorts like Fuerteventura, Tenerife and Gran Canaria can offer equally spectacular alternatives in a single location.

Some of the Roman’s methods were quite unsavoury, with brutal treatment of slaves and merciless invasions of foreign lands amongst their acts. But most people would quote other facets of Roman lifestyle when recalling their impact on the world. A new type of civilisation and culture has left us with some magnificent sporting arenas and theatres. Their engineering skills created road networks and town layouts largely unfamiliar to the countries they chose to rule over.

The Romans also set new standards in terms of accommodation, diet, clothing and personal hygiene. There systems of food cultivation and transport logistics were radical, allowing huge cities to benefit from the supply fresh vegetables, although the farming methods required for the provision of ample supplies of fresh meat and fish had yet to be developed.

Fresh water supplies were also a legacy of Roman intelligence and ambition. They developed complex waterways, including canals and aqueducts that were capable of transporting large volumes of fresh water into the areas where they were needed. This was a significant change over societies of the past that had been forced to set up home wherever water supplies were available, namely near springs and rivers. These new techniques made it possible to build towns in areas of the countryside that had previously been uninhabitable.

The Roman baths were also unique feature of locations where the upper classes of Roman civilisation chose to live. The great Roman Baths in the city of Bath, England were constructed within 20 years of the Romans invading Britain, indicating just how important these facilities were to the invaders. It is said that the site of the hot springs in Bath had already led to the development of some kind of bathing facility, originally constructed by the Celts, but the Romans quickly improved things with their own methods.

The way the Romans built their homes, roads and the baths were totally new to Britain. They would drive oak piles into the muddy ground for stability and use lead to line tanks and prevent leaks. The buildings were slowly expanded and improved over the next 300 years and remained in use for around 400 years until the Romans left the country in the fifth century. Most of the major cities occupied by the Romans were provided with a significant bathing complex, which tended to form the heart of the society. Not only were they used for bathing, but also eating, exercising, reading, shopping and socialising. Also they were not just the preserve of the wealthier, more important members of society. Everyone seemed to be welcome including slaves, servants and the very poor.

The facilities like the ones in Bath, England and those in Baile Herculane, Romania used the natural hot springs of the location, but most used their own systems to heat the water required by the baths.

A Roman Bath that has received much recent attention is one on the island of Rhodes. Situated near the town of Kallithea, just seven miles from Rhodes Town, the Thermes of Kallithea is a totally refurbished complex that’s sits on the site of six springs, that originally caused the Romans to build one of their typical bathing centres there. Once the Romans left the island, the equally civilised Greeks continued to use and improve the baths, but after a revival in the period between the two World Wars, the baths fell into some disrepair. However they have now been completely renovated and are a very stylish and luxurious facility that attracts many visitors. The original Roman styling has been preserved and the central Rotunda forms a beautiful focal point that has even been used by filmmakers in the past. The new entrance area and cool shaded areas are perfect places to relax and enjoy the wonderful scenery in this part of the island.

This simple holiday drink recipe is a big hit for those who don’t want an overly alcoholic taste in their drinks. To make this great festive berry drink all you have to do is mix 2 cans of frozen or fresh cranberry juice with a can of orange juice, a few splashes of ginger ale or lemon juice, a splash of your choice of a clear alcohol like gin or vodka, and a flourish of fresh cranberries or orange slices on top and you are done.

Hot Mulled Wine

This is an amazing drink that all of your guests will compliment you for. Perfect for the holidays or sitting in front of the fire, this hot mulled wine recipe will add some festive joy to your holiday. The recipe for this is 2 liters of a decent burgundy wine mixed with a cut and peeled tangerine, 16 to 20 cloves, 3 or 4 cinnamon sticks and a half cup of liquid honey. Once you have those all mixed in a large pot let it simmer on low heat for a few hours. The aroma of your mulled wine will fill your room and soon enough you’ll be enjoying it.

Drunk on Christmas

This appropriately named drink is a fun concoction that you can make to really spice up the holiday party and keep the good times rolling. Over ice, mix 3 oz of melon liqueur with 2 oz of an Irish whiskey topped with 1 oz of apple schnapps and 4 oz of sour mix. Stir and strain into your tumblers, garnish with cherries and you’ve got the perfect holiday drink to get you drunk on Christmas.
