For the young Cigar Entrepreneur, choosing the right smoke can be the most difficult of matters. One has to know what one is looking for, as well as looking at. There is such a wide variety of high-profile cigars on the market today, that one just about has to have some instruction prior to that first purchase.

First, we will cover the subject of flavor. The layman would assume that all cigars are made from the same tobacco, as well as have the same flavor. The truth is, there is a massive variety of tobacco flavors available, each particular flavor having its own level of intensity. Your own personal favorite could very well be one that everyone else despises. Everyone has a different pallet for a cigar. Regardless, the actual mix of tobacco, the time elapsed since the making of the cigar, the condition it is in (storage, humidor, etc) and what you have drank or ate before or during the smoking of the cigar all have a bearing on the actual taste.

As far as only being one flavor of tobacco initially grown, this also is a fallacy. Tobaccos will attain different flavors depending upon the soil in which that particular plant is grown. In addition, different parts of the actual tobacco plant are utilized to define a particular flavor. All of these factors are blended together by cigar gurus who know what will go well with what to produce an original and excellent cigar.

With all this in mind, we can assume that picking that right cigar is going to be difficult at best. It takes more than just a random pick or a glance. It takes knowledge.

First, always refer to a smoker. If you know someone within your circle that enjoys a good high-quality cigar, ask him or her about what they like. Tell them your favorite flavors of food and fruit. This will give them a good idea as to what will lay best on your pallet. If you don’t know a connoisseur of fine cigars, ask the individual that runs your cigar shop. He/She may not smoke, but you can be certain that they know what cigar smokers come back for over and over.

Once you have chosen a cigar for consideration begin your inspection. Before we go too deeply into this, however, let’s discuss the occasional white powdery substance that you may come across on a cigar. Do not let this turn you away, as this is what is called “Bloom.” Bloom is simply the result of ageing on a cigar and is in no way a bad thing. Actually, it may very well be considered a positive aspect. This enhances the flavor. Mold, on the other hand, should be avoided. If a cigar is kept at extreme levels of humidity, it will form a blue-green tint on the packaging. Avoid it at all costs.

Ask yourself if you would prefer a mild cigar, or a more full-flavored smoke. If you would lean more towards the full-flavor option, then choose a cigar with a larger ring. The ring is the actual diameter of the cigar. The larger the diameter, the more intense, and multiple blends you will experience.

Another way to get a feel for the taste of a cigar is the smell. Take a good whiff of it. If the smell is overwhelming, then it will likely be very strong. Take notice that we use the word “likely” in that reference. This is not always the case. Some smokes smell a level or two more intense than they actually taste.

Next, how long do you want to smoke a cigar? Common sense tells us that the longer the cigar, the longer the smoke-time. However, another way to tell is to gently squeeze the cigar ¾ of the way up. If it seems very tight, it will have a more difficult draw and take longer to smoke. If it is loose, the smoke will proceed at a faster rate.

Moving on, we have the construction of the cigar. Does it appear lumpy or feel loose at spots here and there? If so, you probably do not want it. You see, the creation of a good hand-rolled cigar is actually considered a work of art in some circles. The way a cigar looks is at least 40 % of the selling value. If it does not look good, it is far more difficult to move, commercially speaking.

In choosing the right cigar for you, the one and only true manner is to just shop around. Research reviews online. There are a number of very effective and consistently updated review sites, such as Cigar Inspector. These sites will give you individual reviews by people who have tried the cigar. Then, once you pick out one to try, do not go in with the attitude that if you don’t like this one, you will never try another. Expect to invest a little time in finding your perfect cigar. Even then, when you find that perfect Robusto or Maduro, keep shopping. Variety is truly the spice of life.

Macanudo Maduro Sampler Edition Cigar Review This 6×60 cigar comes in a special retailer only 4 pack sampler with three other Macanudo blends, all in a 6×60 format. It features a coal black, thin firm wrapper with small veins, invisible seams, a nice oil sheen, a double cap and a rich hay and tobacco aroma. First light reveals a perfect draw, medium body flavors of a rich, smooth an oily aged tobacco with a creamy textured finish, putting out plenty of smoke. The first third comes down to a mild-medium, with creamy smooth oily tobacco flavor with a bit of earth and sweetness, holding the same flavors on the long finish. Draw and smoke output is excellent with a good burn, not needing any attention. The 2nd third changes up slightly to a slightly sweet and oily musty chocolate. It’s an interesting combo of flavors, and it’s growing on me. The last third drops the mustiness for a dry light earth flavor, leaving a much heavier, warmer finish. Ending at 1:10 min the stick had excellent construction the whole way through. Thank you to General Cigar for providing this for review! ?The ?$ 1K a Day? campaign is the perfect way for businesses and individuals to show their support for our nation?s armed forces,? said Bradford. ?The importance of letting our men and women in the military know that we do not take for granted what they do for our country, every day, cannot be stressed enough.?

?Entertaining the men and women of our armed forces overseas has been one of the highlights of my life,? said entertainer and USO tour veteran Wayne Newton. ?I have been associated with the USO for decades and am honored to join the organization in accepting General Cigar and the IPCPR?s generous donation which will go a long way in helping fund the USO?s new Las Vegas center.?

General Cigar and the IPCPR will be in Las Vegas for the IPCPR?S 79th annual convention and international trade show which brings premium cigar manufacturers and retailers together to celebrate the industry and debut new products.

?We chose to represent the premium cigar category by contributing to the USO because we value the organization?s heritage and long-term commitment to supporting members of the U.S. Armed Forces bravely serving our country all over the world,? said Dan Carr president of General Cigar. ?We are honored to assist the USO in enhancing their presence in the city of Las Vegas which has graciously welcomed the IPCPR tradeshow for many years.?

The USO has more than 160 locations worldwide that serve as a home away from home for our military. This year marks the 70th anniversary of the organization and its mission to lift the spirits of America?s troops and their families. Most expensive Cigar

Most expensive Cigar

Gurkha His Majesty’s Reserve (HMR) holds the title of “world’s most expensive cigar ever made.” If you are looking for the absolute best, this is it.

For years, Gurkha has been known as the “Rolls Royce” of the cigar industry. Its reputation stems from unique blends of rare tobaccos hand crafted by the world’s foremost rollers. ’His Majesty’s Reserve’ is no exception, made from the most expensive cognac and premium tobacco. HMR starts with a rare aged Dominican wrapper that covers a secret blend of filler tobaccos from all over the world. Once the cigars are rolled, they then undergo a unique infusion process that involves an entire bottle of Louis XIII Cognac. This infusion process is very unique in that it does not take away from the tobacco flavor of the aged leaves, but rather complements them in grand fashion.

Fewer than 100 boxes of HMR are produced every year and the allocation of these rare gems is decided by Gurkha President Kaizad Hansotia. Cigar.com is proud to be one of the world’s only authorized dealers to sell this landmark cigar. There is no finer cigar, blend, packaging, or tobacco in the world. There are few blends, if any, that could lay claim to being finer. Read some reviews from very lucky people who have had the opportunity to try one:

Unquestionable the finest cigar I have ever had. It is like smoking a fine glass of cognac. The aroma and flavor were esquisite. How Gurkha produces this cigar is beyond me. – turd fergeson

excellent cigar but no cigar is worth that much – majesty

got this cigar as a present. I like premium cigars, and this one was quite good actually. Of course far away from a nice Cuban, but for blend of less famous tabaccos quite OK. My only complaint is the ridicolous label and the bad taste packaging. For this price you could expect more. anyway it was free for me, so I don’t bother. (P.S. though I would have appreciated to get the Cognac seperately) – partagashase

once had an opportunity to have a puff of this amazing Cigar. Its absolutely marvelous. Cigar lovers should have this tasted atleast once in thr entire life, even though its words most higly expensive cigar ever made…kudos to Gurkha…cheers – Vijay – India – vijayakumar Honnungar

The cigar was definitely a surprise. After lighting it, it had an absolutely wonderful taste. It was sweet, unlike any cigar I have ever tasted. The Gurkha HMR is one cigar that every cigar lover should try at least once in their life, sure glad I did. – 1luckyguy

 Cigars: Processing Tobacco
By John Payne and Patrice Hirschfeld

Why Process Tobacco?

After being harvested and cured, tobacco is not fully stabilized and can not be kept long. It must next be fermented. Fermentation is a complex process, but to make a long story short, one can say that it is a transformation of the chemical components by oxydation.

Fermentation and Aging

Fermentation is a natural transformation of the chemical components that stabilizes the raw material. The process is rather deep and quite fast. When well fermented, a tobacco can be stored for years without damage.

Aging is a slow natural evolution , during which time the tobacco is going to improve its characteristics and to lose its “green” taste. Once blended in a cigar, the tobacco deserves a new period of aging in order to reach a good balance between the blend components.

Why Ferment Tobacco?

Beyond stabilization and storage capability, fermentation makes the tobacco lose its raw and green taste that nobody would really like.

Who can ferment tobacco ?

It is easy to grow a few tobacco plants in your backyard if you like gardening. But if you want to process it for smoking, you’ll have to ferment it. If not, you’ll have some trouble with the taste. To ferment your tobacco properly, you need either large quantities (hundreds of pounds) to build a bulk volume for natural processing, or expensive equipment for artificial fermentation. Our recommandation is to grow petunias (decorative tobacco plants, with a lot of colorful blossoms) and to buy cigars to enjoy your smoke!

How to Ferment Tobacco?

To process a natural fermentation, tobacco is piled up. The weight and the natural moisture content allow the fermentation to start in the middle of the pile. The temperature goes up. When the targeted temperature is reached, the pile is broken and rebuilt, the outside tobacco going inside and vice versa. And that as many times as is necessary, until the whole pile is properly fermented. Some heavy tobaccos can need up to six turnings. It takes months to ferment them correctly.

Fermentation and Rotting

Don’t be afraid when reading that tobacco is fermented! Tobacco is not going to be rotten! Just stabilized and smokeable without giving you nausea. Fermentation considerably improves the original taste.

Fermentation and Quality

Each tobacco has its own fermentation procedure. The main factors that define the process are the texture of the material, and the utilization of the tobacco afterwards. Light wrappers and full bodied fillers are not fermented the same way.

Fermentation and Temperature

Humid tobacco leaves put in a pile are going to start fermenting, giving out heat. The control of the temperature inside the pile is a key factor of success. If the temperature goes too high, the tobacco will be cooked and deteriorate. Each type has its own optimal temperature. When it is reached, the pile has to be opened to stop the heating process and a new pile is built with cooled down tobacco. The outside tobaccos go inside and vice-versa. As an example, a dark air cured tobacco accepts a temperature up to about 130ºF. And disaster can start at 140ºF.

The CAO Black is the original CAO blend that put the brand on the map and led  to the overwhelming success of CAO cigars today.  Only available at Cigar.com and a small number of retailers worldwide, these cigars are often difficult to find.

When Cano Ozinger transitioned from pipe maker to cigar manufacturer, he had no idea how big his cigar business was about to become. In fact, today an overwhelming majority of their business is in cigars. They have developed some of the most unique cigar concepts and have utilized state of the art packaging and high-grade tobacco to put CAO on the map as one of the fastest growing manufacturers in the world with distribution inside and outside the US.

CAO Black is a rare find. The first regular blend ever made by CAO, it is only available at a handful of select retailers. It is the blend that made them famous and is still highly regarded today. In 2005 it received a perfect 10 out of 10 rating from Cigar Buyer Magazine. Each box of CAO Black is individually numbered making it a collector”s item in and of itself. The cigars are medium-bodied with a soft and dry finish and are only being made in limited supply. Don’t miss your chance to try a piece of cigar history.

Having smoked 4 so far at different points of aging (mind you, not that long), I can generalize the Bengal as this: The spice becomes much more noticed with age (not stronger, just more noticeable), and this observation is only after a few months in my humi. Earthy/ Root-y, yet not bitter nor stenchful, with a sweet honey-and-nuts undertone. Smooth draw, though others in the series are smoother. The potency and flavours are more “maduro- like” than “natural” to me, but then I prefer a double-maduro… – aphio-igor
