Gurkha His Majesty’s Reserve (HMR) holds the title of “world’s most expensive cigar ever made.” If you are looking for the absolute best, this is it.
For years, Gurkha has been known as the “Rolls Royce” of the cigar industry. Its reputation stems from unique blends of rare tobaccos hand crafted by the world’s foremost rollers. ’His Majesty’s Reserve’ is no exception, made from the most expensive cognac and premium tobacco. HMR starts with a rare aged Dominican wrapper that covers a secret blend of filler tobaccos from all over the world. Once the cigars are rolled, they then undergo a unique infusion process that involves an entire bottle of Louis XIII Cognac. This infusion process is very unique in that it does not take away from the tobacco flavor of the aged leaves, but rather complements them in grand fashion.
Fewer than 100 boxes of HMR are produced every year and the allocation of these rare gems is decided by Gurkha President Kaizad Hansotia. Cigar.com is proud to be one of the world’s only authorized dealers to sell this landmark cigar. There is no finer cigar, blend, packaging, or tobacco in the world. There are few blends, if any, that could lay claim to being finer. Read some reviews from very lucky people who have had the opportunity to try one:
Unquestionable the finest cigar I have ever had. It is like smoking a fine glass of cognac. The aroma and flavor were esquisite. How Gurkha produces this cigar is beyond me. – turd fergeson
excellent cigar but no cigar is worth that much – majesty
got this cigar as a present. I like premium cigars, and this one was quite good actually. Of course far away from a nice Cuban, but for blend of less famous tabaccos quite OK. My only complaint is the ridicolous label and the bad taste packaging. For this price you could expect more. anyway it was free for me, so I don’t bother. (P.S. though I would have appreciated to get the Cognac seperately) – partagashase
once had an opportunity to have a puff of this amazing Cigar. Its absolutely marvelous. Cigar lovers should have this tasted atleast once in thr entire life, even though its words most higly expensive cigar ever made…kudos to Gurkha…cheers – Vijay – India – vijayakumar Honnungar
The cigar was definitely a surprise. After lighting it, it had an absolutely wonderful taste. It was sweet, unlike any cigar I have ever tasted. The Gurkha HMR is one cigar that every cigar lover should try at least once in their life, sure glad I did. – 1luckyguy

Macanudo Gold Label Cigars: Processing Tobacco
By John Payne and Patrice Hirschfeld
Why Process Tobacco?
After being harvested and cured, tobacco is not fully stabilized and can not be kept long. It must next be fermented. Fermentation is a complex process, but to make a long story short, one can say that it is a transformation of the chemical components by oxydation.
Fermentation and Aging
Fermentation is a natural transformation of the chemical components that stabilizes the raw material. The process is rather deep and quite fast. When well fermented, a tobacco can be stored for years without damage.
Aging is a slow natural evolution , during which time the tobacco is going to improve its characteristics and to lose its “green” taste. Once blended in a cigar, the tobacco deserves a new period of aging in to reach a good balance between the blend components.
Why Ferment Tobacco?
Beyond stabilization and storage capability, fermentation makes the tobacco lose its raw and green taste that nobody would really like.
Who can ferment tobacco ?
It is easy to grow a few tobacco plants in your backyard if you like gardening. But if you want to process it for smoking, you’ll have to ferment it. If not, you’ll have some trouble with the taste. To ferment your tobacco properly, you need either large quantities (hundreds of pounds) to build a bulk volume for natural processing, or expensive equipment for artificial fermentation. Our recommandation is to grow petunias (decorative tobacco plants, with a lot of colorful blossoms) and to cigars to enjoy your smoke!
How to Ferment Tobacco?
To process a natural fermentation, tobacco is piled up. The weight and the natural moisture content allow the fermentation to start in the middle of the pile. The temperature goes up. When the targeted temperature is reached, the pile is broken and rebuilt, the outside tobacco going inside and vice versa. And that as many times as is necessary, until the whole pile is properly fermented. Some heavy tobaccos can need up to six turnings. It takes months to ferment them correctly.
Fermentation and Rotting
Don’t be afraid when reading that tobacco is fermented! Tobacco is not going to be rotten! Just stabilized and smokeable without giving you nausea. Fermentation considerably improves the original taste.
Fermentation and Quality
Each tobacco has its own fermentation procedure. The main factors that define the process are the texture of the material, and the utilization of the tobacco afterwards. Light wrappers and full bodied fillers are not fermented the same way.
Fermentation and Temperature
Humid tobacco leaves put in a pile are going to start fermenting, giving out heat. The control of the temperature inside the pile is a key factor of success. If the temperature goes too high, the tobacco will be cooked and deteriorate. Each type has its own optimal temperature. When it is reached, the pile has to be opened to stop the heating process and a new pile is built with cooled down tobacco. The outside tobaccos go inside and vice-versa. As an example, a dark air cured tobacco accepts a temperature up to about 130ºF. And disaster can start at 140ºF.

The CAO Black is the original CAO blend that put the brand on the map and led to the overwhelming success of CAO cigars today. Only available at Cigar.com and a small number of retailers worldwide, these cigars are often difficult to find.
When Cano Ozinger transitioned from pipe maker to cigar manufacturer, he had no idea how big his cigar business was about to become. In fact, today an overwhelming majority of their business is in cigars. They have developed some of the most unique cigar concepts and have utilized state of the art packaging and high-grade tobacco to put CAO on the map as one of the fastest growing manufacturers in the world with distribution inside and outside the US.
CAO Black is a rare find. The first regular blend ever made by CAO, it is only available at a handful of select retailers. It is the blend that made them famous and is still highly regarded today. In 2005 it received a perfect 10 out of 10 rating from Cigar Buyer Magazine. Each box of CAO Black is individually numbered making it a collector”s item in and of itself. The cigars are medium-bodied with a soft and dry finish and are only being made in limited supply. Don’t miss your chance to try a piece of cigar history.
Having smoked 4 so far at different points of aging (mind you, not that long), I can generalize the Bengal as this: The spice becomes much more noticed with age (not stronger, just more noticeable), and this observation is only after a few months in my humi. Earthy/ Root-y, yet not bitter nor stenchful, with a sweet honey-and-nuts undertone. Smooth draw, though others in the series are smoother. The potency and flavours are more “maduro- like” than “natural” to me, but then I prefer a double-maduro… – aphio-igor

Your cigar lighter is an integral part of the smoking process, whether you have a torch lighter, dual torch or another type of lighter. However, lighter maintenance and troubleshooting should be part of your regular care regimen, in to ensure that your lighter works properly every time. That said, some smokers are unaware of the importance of bleeding your lighter. Regularly bleeding your lighter will help ensure that your smoking experience is enjoyable.
Why does your lighter need to be bled? The bleeding process ensures that all old fuel and air within the fuel chamber are eliminated. This ensures that you have a smooth, even flame, without any fears of flares or sputtering. The bleeding process is simple and effective. Youll need only a single tool and a few safety steps to ensure your lighter is performing properly.
The first step is to hold the lighter vertically, with the bottom of the lighter facing upward. Do not hold the lighter near your face or your ears during this process. Now, locate the filler nozzle, which is the metal nipple on the bottom of the lighter through which fuel is added. Once you have located the nozzle, you will need a small screwdriver or another similar tool. Depress the nozzle with the tool and you will hear the hiss of escaping gas and air. Do not perform this operation near any open flame.
In a short time, the hissing sound will stop and you can release the nozzle. Shake the lighter vigorously several times. Now, insert the tool into the filler nozzle once more. You will hear the lighter begin hissing again, though it may sputter a bit. When the hissing stops (keep the lighter away from your ears), you can refill the lighter. Maintain the upright position while refilling the lighter.
You should bleed your lighter whenever you notice that the fuel is becoming low. If your lighter does not have a means to check the fuel level, you will have to rely on the performance of the flame. Spitting or flaring are good signs that your lighter is nearing the empty mark and needs to be bled. Exercise care when bleeding and you will remain safe during this vital process.

A Cigar is a natural product and the quality of a cigar is directly linked with the type and quality of tobacco used in its production, just as the wine depends on the type and quality of grapes used for the brewing.
The fields for tobacco are flat so that the seeds don’t flow away with the water stream. After planting the seed, they are covered with cloth or straw to protect them from the direct light of the sun. This covering is gradually removed as they begin to germinate, and after around 35 days the fields are sprayed with pesticides, they are then transplanted in to tobacco fields usually in the second half of October. The fields are irrigated from below and the leaves are watered both by rain and the morning dew.
The tobacco plant is mainly considered as a three parts plant: the top of the plant is called corona, the middle, and the bottom. As the leaves grow, buds appear at the top. These have to be removed by hand to prevent the plants from stunting leaf and growth. The quality of wrapper leaf is very important for any cigar. A special type of plant called Corojos, specifically used to provide wrapper leaves for the very best cigars. These plants are always grown under gauze sheets held up by tall wooden poles, which protects them from becoming too thick in a protective response to sunlight. Another technique, called tapado can also be used to cover the plants to helps them remain smooth.
During the harvest, leaves are removed by hand using a single movement. The selected leaves for wrappers are put in bundles of five called manojo, or hand. The leaves are picked in six phases:
libra de pie (at the base) uno y medio (one-and-a-half) centro ligero (light center) centro fino (thin center) centro gordo (thick center) corona (crown)
The libra de pie section cannot be used for wrappers. A gap of one week is given between each phase. The finest leaves are found in the middle of the plant; the top leaves (corona) are usually too oily to be used for wrappers so they are only used for domestic consumption, and are often used as binder leaves. Each plant is visited for an average of 170 times and the whole cycle from transplanted seedlings to the end of harvesting takes some 120 days.
The wrapper leaves grown under cover are classified by color:
ligero (light)
seco (dry)
viso (glossy)
amarillo (yellow)
medio tiempo (half texture)
quebrado (broken)
The plants, which are grown direct sun, are divided into volado, seco, ligero, and medio tiempo. The leaves from the top of the plant have a very strong flavor, the seco from the middle are much lighter, and the volado leaves from the bottom are used to add bulk and for their burning qualities. To make a good quality cigar, all the various types are blended together, along with a suitable wrapper leaf, in a special proportions to give cigar a mild, medium, or full flavor. It also ensures that the cigar will burn well. Large, average, small size are classified and by physical condition. Unhealthy or broken leaves are used for cigarettes or machine-made cigars. If all the leaves are good, each wrapper plant can wrap 32 cigars. The condition and quality of the wrapper leaf is important for the attractive appearance of a cigar, as well as for the aroma and taste.
The bundles of leaves are then taken to a shelter. The shelter faces west so that the sun heats one end in the morning and the other in the late after-noon. The temperature and humidity under the shelter is carefully controlled, by opening and closing the doors at both ends to take account of changes of temperature or rainfall. The leaves are left to dry for between 45 and 60 days, depending on the weather. During this time, the green chlorophyll in the leaves turns to brown carotene, giving them their characteristic color.
Then these are brought to fermentation houses and placed in piles about three feet high, covered with jute. Enough moisture remains in the leaves to start the fermentation. Heat develops, but the temperature must be watched carefully so that it does not exceed 92 degrees F during the 35 to 40 days that the piles are left intact. The leaves assume a uniform color.
These leaves are then sorted and stripped. Each leaf is carefully examined and graded. Broken leaves are set aside, to be used for cigarettes. The leaves then return to the fermentation area. The second fermentation begins within the damp leaves. The temperature inside must not exceed 110 degrees F for around 60 days. Because of the fermentation process, cigar tobacco is much lower in acidity, tar, and nicotine than cigarette tobacco, making it much more appetizing.
It is now time for the leaves to be sent to the factories or warehouses for further production.

Are you new to the world of cigar smoking? If so, then you likely have several questions concerning the use of a cigar lighter to get that smoke lit. Of course, actually getting the cigar to light is pretty important, but you will find that there is more to consider here than just the method of applying the flame to tobacco. You will need patience, knowledge and the right set of tools. Butane torch lighters and guillotine cutters are the best options for the novice cigar smoker and will help to ensure that you have the simplest, most enjoyable smoke possible.
The first thing you need to do is to remove about 1/8th of an inch from the cap of the cigar. To do this, place the cutter on the shoulder of the cap and cut. You will find that this really only applies to guillotine cutters, though, as the process is different with scissors or a punch. When the cap has been cut, you can start the actual lighting process. However, don’t touch that flame to the cigar just yet. You need to warm it up first.
This is a process called toasting and it is required to bring the tobacco up to temperature. You should also ensure that the lighter you use is fueled with butane, rather than lighter fluid, as butane is odorless and tasteless. Therefore, it will not taint the cigar with any chemical flavors or odors. Once the cigar has been toasted, you can continue with the lighting process. Place the cigar in your mouth at a 45-degree angle. Hold the cigar’s body with one hand and use the other to hold the lighter. Light the lighter and hold the cigar over the flame. Turn the cigar in your mouth, and draw on it as it turns.
Keep turning the cigar throughout the lighting process. When the entire cigar has caught, inspect the end for any area that did not light properly. You may need to reapply the flame at this point. You can also breathe on the area to help it catch and stay lit.
Once the foot of the cigar is lit, take it out of your mouth. You’ll need to visually inspect the cigar to make sure that the entire surface was lit. If you see areas that did not light, or are only smoldering, you’ll need to relight the cigar once more. Just repeat the process above and you will have your cigar burning bright in no time. In just moments, you will be able to relax with that delightful flavor and aroma.
